About Basin & Grange

Basin & Grange is a five-piece acoustic band that embodies traditional bluegrass and old-time melodies while also embracing a creative spirit that takes the band’s music in new directions. This combination of innovation and conservation inspires the band's name. "Basin and Grange" evokes the vast and beautiful region of the American West (the Basin & Range), home to the band, and a symbol of exploration and freedom. "Range" is playfully adapted to "Grange", calling to mind the country roots of this group's music.

Basin & Grange won 1st Place in the Durango Meltdown's inaugural band competition in 2022 with a song selection featuring the band's tight vocal harmonies and original song compositions. In 2023 Basin & Grange performaed as a main band in the Durango Bluegrass Meltdown. Other past bookings include the Intermountain Acoustic Music Association's local concert series, Murray's acoustic concert series, Summit County Fair, and other events in the Salt Lake City area.

Bill Moore

Vocals, Mandolin, Bass

Bill discovered the banjo at the age of 15 when he heard Larry McNeely playing banjo on the Glen Campbell Good Time Hour TV show. The sound of the banjo captivated Bill, although he didn’t realize at the time where the 3-finger banjo really fit into the music world. The banjo lead Bill to bluegrass and the sounds of Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and the Stanley Brothers. Bill played banjo for 30 years, but always had an interest in other instruments. He loves trying his hand at a little of everything.

Bill currently plays mandolin and upright bass with Basin & Grange.

Besides playing music, Bill also enjoys building instruments and is currently playing an F5 mandolin he recently completed. Bill has played in numerous local Utah bands over the years including: Lonesome Ridge, The Bangs Tapscott Unit, Around the Bend, and The Rusty Shovels.

Mark Smith

Vocals, Dobro, Bass

Music started for Mark with piano lessons at age eight. From there it was on to school chorus and band and then the world of rock and roll with his high school buddies. Mark went on to study music composition, saxophone, and double bass at the Berklee College and the University of Tennessee - Knoxville. He worked in local bands in East Tennessee before surrendering to the call of a steady job and a career in tech in Albuquerque. In New Mexico, Mark worked with several bands, most notably the Sid Fendley Trio and as a founding member of the bluegrass group Higher Ground. Relocating to Utah in 2011, Mark found himself with some free time on his hands and decided to learn the dobro.

Mark is still gainfully employed (for now, retirement isn't that far away) at Hill AFB and has a lovely wife and two teenagers at home. As time allows, Mark loves to mountain bike and fly fish for Utah's native cutts.

Boyd Timothy

Vocals, Guitar, Mandolin, Bass

Boyd comes from a musical family. At age five, he started playing piano, and he sang in church choirs for many years. Bluegrass grabbed him after he married. His father-in-law, steeped in bluegrass, encouraged participation at local jams. Boyd became an accomplished vocalist and instrumentalist. He is self-taught on guitar, mandolin, banjo, and bass.

Boyd is strongly pursued not just for his musical talents, but also for his original songs. Using two of Boyd’s originals, Basin & Grange won first place at the inaugural Durango Bluegrass Meltdown band competition in 2022. His "Pines of Caroline" placed 1st in the Podunk Bluegrass Festival Songwriting contest in 2020 and in 2021, Boyd performed at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) Songwriter Showcase.

Boyd also climbs mountain trails in Utah on his bikes because, well, it is difficult to play music and write songs 24/7.

Josh Stewart

Vocals, Banjo

As a child Josh was exposed to all sorts of great music.  Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Gordon Lightfoot, and CSNY left their impresson for vocal harmony, song narrative, and traditional music.  In his early high school years, the banjo caught his attention after listening to the Bluegrass Album Band and getting up close and personal at a small concert venue with the Newgrass Revival. Since then (and it's been a while), Josh has enjoyed playing in a number of bands in the Midwest and here in Utah. He has also done studio work and shared his love of bluegrass through teaching.

New to Utah from the Midwest, Josh and his wife have come to love the mountains and all they have to offer.  When not playing banjo, Josh can be found running the trails, biking, and skiing as often as possible.

Jonah Schupbach

Vocals, Guitar

Jonah has been playing guitar since his dad taught him his first G-chord in middle school. He grew up in a family of pickers and singers, and his parents have fond memories of their little toddler belting out “Cigareeeets and whiskey and wild wild women...” while listening to the Sons of the Pioneers. Jonah swears he had the tenor harmony to every Ricky Skaggs song down cold by the age of eight. In college, he studied jazz, rock, and classical guitar, and his musical tastes have only broadened since those days. But the soul and simplicity of country and bluegrass music have always made this music his first love.

Jonah won the 2019 Utah State Flatpick Guitar Championship, and in the same year, his two daughters won the Utah State Fiddle Championships (open and novice divisions). He is a proud husband and father of five young, budding musicians, and a professor of philosophy and logic in his day job. He also loves fine woodworking and is an aspiring luthier.
